Bláa Lónið

Located near Keflavík Airport is The Blue Lagoon, a man made geothermal spa whos silica laden waters contain have healing effects on skin. The water’s properties were discovered during the construction of the nearby Svartsengi power station and with over 700,000 visiters a year the spa has become Iceland’s most popular attractions.

This is our third visit to Iceland and we have always started our time here at the spa, a unique and very relaxing place. Each time we have come it has been expanded adding a new spa and a hotel however this time the biggest addition is a massive lava barrier that surrounds the plant and the spa. These facilities are located on the Reykjanes Peninsula which runs along the border of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates making it geologically active. This activity picked up in 2021 and barriers were built to protect the plant, spa and the nearby town of Grindavik. There currently no active eruptions (is that good or bad?) however steam can be seen rising in many places. It is interesting to see this new lava field and the barriers, pictures do not do the scale of the volcanic event and the mitigation efforts justice.

Still waiting on our luggage. Luckily the spa sell bathing suits.
